Des Plaines State Fish and Wildlife Area

The Des Plaines State Fish and Wildlife Area extends across 5,000 acres of natural prairie land, rivers, and water features at the confluence of major waterways.

The Illinois Department of Conservation acquired this land from the federal government in 1948, transforming it from a hunting area into a multi-purpose recreational destination.

The site maintains two nature preserves, Grant Creek Prairie and Des Plaines Dolomite Prairies, protecting rare prairie ecosystems and native plant communities.

Three paved boat ramps provide access to the Kankakee River, with engine restrictions of 10 horsepower applying only to the backwater areas.

The location operates Illinois largest permit-based pheasant hunting facility and features twelve miles of equestrian trails open from mid-April through October.
