Joliet East Side Historic District

Joliet East Side Historic District is a neighborhood with roughly 290 buildings, more than 280 of which contribute to the area's historic character. The structures display Victorian, Italianate, and Queen Anne styles throughout the streets.

The area formed in the early 1800s but grew rapidly after 1852 due to the canal and railroad connections through town. These transportation links turned Joliet into a major commerce center for the region.

The neighborhood reflects the homes of prosperous residents built during the 1800s, with architectural styles that show the area's growth and economic expansion. These buildings reveal how different periods and outside influences shaped what people chose to construct.

The neighborhood has parking areas and organized walking tours available. Daytime visits in good weather allow you to see architectural details clearly as you move through the streets.

Local limestone quarries supplied stone for many buildings in this neighborhood and beyond to other important structures in the region. This regional resource shaped the appearance of countless structures across a wider area.
