Chicagoland Speedway, Motorsport racing track in Joliet, United States
Chicagoland Speedway is a tri-oval motorsport circuit in Joliet, Illinois, that runs 1.5 miles (2.4 km) in length. The grandstands seat up to 47,000 spectators, and the banked turns reach angles of 18 degrees.
The racing track emerged from a partnership between Indianapolis Motor Speedway and International Speedway Corporation starting in 1995 and opened in 2001. After nearly two decades of operation, the facility ceased active racing in 2019.
Fans from across the Midwest gathered here on race weekends until 2019, cheering for NASCAR teams and experiencing American motorsport culture firsthand. The name ties the facility to the Chicago region, making it a point of identity for racing enthusiasts from Illinois and neighboring states.
The circuit sits roughly 40 miles (65 km) southwest of Chicago and is directly accessible from Interstate 80. Shuttle buses connect the grounds to Joliet Union Station on event days.
The facility hosted three of the five closest IndyCar finishes ever recorded, including a 2002 win by Sam Hornish Jr. with just a 0.0024-second margin. These razor-thin outcomes made the track memorable among drivers and fans alike.
