Heights Theater, Movie theater in Columbia Heights, United States
The Heights Theater is a movie theater in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Minneapolis, housed in a restored Art Deco building with period furnishings and a Wurlitzer organ. The auditorium seats around 400 people and is lit by antique chandeliers fitted with Egyptian lead crystals.
The theater opened in 1926 and over the decades survived fires, a bombing, and a tornado in 1949 that damaged its tower. After years of continuous operation, it went through a major restoration in the 1990s that brought it back to its original look.
The Heights Theater screens both new releases and older films, sometimes accompanied by a live organist playing the restored Wurlitzer. Sitting in the auditorium during an organ performance feels like stepping into a different era of cinema.
The theater is easy to reach by public transit from central Minneapolis, and street parking is available nearby. Because the auditorium is relatively small, it is a good idea to arrive early for popular screenings.
The Heights Theater is the longest continuously operating cinema in the Twin Cities area, having never fully shut down since 1926. The chandeliers hanging in the auditorium today are the originals from when the building first opened.
