Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve, Protected natural area on the Northern Neck, Virginia
Hughlett Point Natural Area Preserve is a protected natural area on Virginia's Northern Neck along the Chesapeake Bay shore. The 204-acre property combines tidal wetlands, undeveloped beaches, sand dunes, and upland forests that extend along the water's edge.
The preserve was established as a protected area, with conservation efforts supported by donations from Jessie Ball duPont, who championed land protection in the region for decades. Her contributions helped secure this ecologically important coastal landscape for future generations.
The natural area functions as an educational site where visitors learn about coastal ecosystems through interpretive signs and observation platforms.
A loop trail about 1.8 miles long includes boardwalks and viewing platforms for wildlife observation throughout the property. The small parking area fills quickly, so arriving early helps ensure you can park, especially on weekends.
The preserve protects the habitat of the Northeastern Beach Tiger Beetle, a rare species found in only a handful of coastal locations. It also serves as a crucial stopover where thousands of migrating birds rest and refuel during winter months.
