I-694 Bridge, Road bridge over Mississippi River in Brooklyn Center and Fridley, United States
The I-694 Bridge is a road bridge crossing the Mississippi River with two parallel structures carrying four lanes of traffic in each direction. The span extends approximately 776 feet and connects Brooklyn Center and Fridley on opposite riverbanks.
The westbound span opened in 1963, while the eastbound structure was rebuilt in 1988 to replace the aging original Highway 100 bridge. This reconstruction addressed increasing regional traffic demands during that period.
The bridge stands as a central element of Minneapolis-Saint Paul's transportation network, connecting suburban communities and supporting regional economic growth.
A sidewalk on the north side allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross between the two communities. Daily traffic is heavy, so plan your crossing during non-peak times if possible.
In 1987, engineers reinforced the westbound lanes through an innovative structure built above the existing piers without halting traffic. This approach increased capacity while avoiding complete reconstruction.
