Kan-O-Tex Service Station, Historic filling station in Galena, Kansas, United States
Kan-O-Tex Service Station is a restored 1934 filling station with original fuel pumps and an automobile repair shop located on North Main Street in Galena. The building retains the character of a classic Route 66-era service stop with vintage vehicles on display outside.
The station opened in 1934 and operated along Route 66 until the highway was realigned in 1979, leading to its closure. The building then transformed into a tourist destination that preserves the legacy of this famous American road.
The station displays a 1951 International tow truck that inspired the character Tow Mater from the Pixar film Cars, making it a pilgrimage site for film fans.
Visitors can buy souvenirs, enjoy snacks at the diner-style counter, and take photographs with vintage vehicles displayed outside. The location is easy to visit and offers a chance to experience the feeling of the old Route 66 era.
The building sits on the former site of the Banks Hotel, demolished in 1933, and displays the Kan-O-Tex logo featuring a Kansas sunflower. This connection links the past of Route 66 to the site's current role as a place of remembrance.
