Lackawanna Coal Mine, Underground coal mine tour in McDade Park, Scranton, US
Lackawanna Coal Mine is an underground coal mine located beneath McDade Park in Scranton, about 300 feet below the surface. Original tunnels, machinery, and work areas remain preserved and demonstrate how mining operations functioned at this site.
The Continental Coal Company started mining operations here in 1903 and continued until 1966. The site later became a museum to preserve the region's coal mining history and make it accessible to the public.
Tours are led by people from mining families who share their personal knowledge about how coal work shaped lives and communities in this region. Their stories give visitors a sense of what daily mining life actually meant for local families.
The mine maintains a constant cool temperature year-round, so visitors should bring warmer clothing for comfort underground. Sturdy footwear and reasonable physical fitness help, as the underground paths involve some walking and climbing.
The Clark Vein section displays preserved mining chambers that show different extraction techniques used across various time periods. Visitors can see how mining methods evolved as technology and knowledge improved over the decades.
