Lackawanna State Park, State park in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania.
Lackawanna State Park is a natural area covering 1,445 acres in Lackawanna County, with a lake at its center surrounded by forests. Multiple trails crisscross the landscape for hiking, biking, and other recreational pursuits.
The site was owned by the Maitland Fair and Driving Park Association beginning in 1898, when it operated as a horse racing track and fairground. The land later transformed into the state park that exists today.
The name comes from a Lenape word meaning a stream that branches in two directions. This reflects the Native American peoples who lived here and their deep connection to the water systems of the land.
Access the park via Interstate 81 Exit 199, then head west on Pennsylvania Route 524 for about three miles. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, with clear trails and moderate temperatures for outdoor activities.
Only electric-powered boats are permitted on the lake, keeping the waters quiet and free from fuel engine noise. This rule makes the lake a peaceful place for fishing and other water activities.
