La Pointe Light, Lighthouse in Long Island, Apostle Islands, Wisconsin, US.
La Pointe Light is a cast iron lighthouse standing on Long Island in the Apostle Islands, rising 20 meters above the surrounding landscape. It sends out a green light signal that flashes every six seconds across Lake Superior.
The lighthouse was built in 1896 to replace an older square wooden tower from 1858. This new structure served as an important navigation aid for ships traveling Lake Superior.
The lighthouse reflects how vital shipping was to the development of the Great Lakes region during the 1800s. Today it shows visitors the important role these structures played in protecting vessels traveling these waters.
Access to the lighthouse is by water taxi or private boat, mainly during the summer months. Park rangers offer guided tours during this period and help visitors explore the island.
The structure still holds its original fourth-order Fresnel lens, which continues to shine across the water. This makes it one of the oldest skeletal lighthouses remaining on the Great Lakes.
