Lehigh Gorge State Park, State park in Pennsylvania, US
Lehigh Gorge State Park is a state park along the Lehigh River in Pennsylvania, stretching between White Haven and Jim Thorpe. The land features deep canyons, cascading water, and forested slopes crisscrossed by hiking trails and a converted railway line.
Coal mining operations shaped the region beginning in the 18th century, when the Lehigh Coal Mining Company started extracting resources from the area. Industrial activity left its mark on the landscape and surrounding communities for generations.
The area serves as a gathering place for outdoor enthusiasts who combine kayaking, hiking, and wildlife watching in a single visit. Local residents and visitors alike use the trails and waterside spaces to connect with the natural landscape throughout the seasons.
You can enter the park from three main points: White Haven in the north, Rockport in the middle, and Jim Thorpe in the south. Bring comfortable walking shoes, water, and snacks, as facilities are scattered throughout the area.
The Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail follows a former railway line and connects to the larger Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor. This 26-mile route lets visitors trace industrial history while walking through recovering forest and canyon landscapes.
