Hickory Run State Park, State park in White Haven, Pennsylvania
Hickory Run State Park is a protected area with over 40 miles of trails, several waterfalls, and two lakes in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. The landscape ranges from dense forests to open fields of glacial boulders.
The park was established in 1945 to protect a rare boulder field left by the last ice age. Families of loggers and farmers once lived here, and their old roads now serve as hiking paths.
Visitors can spot native wildlife along the trails, including white-tailed deer and many songbird species common to the Pocono region. The park also shows how forests gradually return after earlier farming activity.
Visitors find camping options from April through October, including tent sites and spots for recreational vehicles. Main trails are well marked, but some sections become slippery after rain.
The boulder field covers roughly 400 by 1800 feet (120 by 550 meters) and contains rocks broken apart by frost during the ice age. These blocks still move slowly downhill, though the process is invisible to the eye.
