Market Street Bridge, Road bridge across Susquehanna River in Harrisburg, United States
Market Street Bridge is a road crossing over the Susquehanna River connecting Harrisburg and Wormleysburg in Pennsylvania. The structure features sixteen arched spans with stone facing that protects the concrete core beneath.
The bridge was designed by engineers from Modjeski and Masters in 1928 to replace an earlier structure destroyed by flooding in 1902. The new design with stone facing and concrete construction was meant to withstand future river floods.
The bridge entrance displays columns salvaged from Pennsylvania's former State Capitol building, which once stood at a different location. These architectural pieces tell the story of how communities preserve and repurpose important historic elements as they evolve over time.
Pedestrians and cyclists have dedicated pathways for crossing between the two towns. The bridge is best experienced on foot or by bicycle to take in the views and architectural details along the way.
The stone facades were specially selected to shield the concrete core from ice and debris during river floods. This protective design reflects engineers' hard-won knowledge from the bridge it replaced.
