Madison Avenue Grounds, Baseball grounds in Baltimore, United States.
Madison Avenue Grounds was an enclosed baseball field in northern Baltimore located between Madison Avenue, Boundary Avenue, Linden Avenue, and an unmarked street. The facility featured designated spectator areas and separate facilities for players, setting new standards for baseball venue design.
This first enclosed baseball park in Baltimore opened in September 1860 for a significant match between the Brooklyn Excelsiors and the Baltimore Excelsiors. The venue remained active in the following decades, notably hosting the Maryland Club of the National Association in 1873.
The grounds hosted interracial baseball games starting in 1870, which represented an important step toward integration in American sports. These early matches demonstrated that the sport could bring people from different communities together.
The grounds are located in a specific section of Baltimore defined by four surrounding streets, making orientation straightforward. Since the site is no longer in active use, it is most helpful to understand its historical location by referencing these street boundaries.
Though the Maryland Club of the National Association used these grounds in 1873 and it was known for important games, its use became surprisingly limited afterward. By 1884, only a single Eastern League game was played there before the grounds faded from significance as a baseball venue.
