Michigan State University Horticulture Gardens

The Michigan State University Horticulture Gardens is a botanical garden spreading across 14 acres (5.7 hectares) with diverse plant collections. The site includes thousands of plant varieties, from annual flowers to multiple rose types, organized throughout different garden areas.

The gardens were founded in 1877 when Michigan Agricultural College established them for teaching and plant research. This educational mission from the beginning shaped the gardens into a place where learning and practical work still go hand in hand.

The Michigan 4-H Children's Garden features more than 50 themed areas where young visitors can explore plants and gardening through hands-on activities. Children discover how gardens grow and change throughout the seasons in these interactive spaces.

The gardens are walkable with wide paths that lead through different plant collections, making it easy to move around at your own pace. Plan to spend several hours to explore all the sections comfortably.

The Clarence E. Lewis Landscape Arboretum serves as an outdoor classroom where students work on real landscaping projects and apply techniques directly to the land. This blend of teaching and hands-on construction sets it apart from typical display gardens.
