Millstone Hill Antenna, Radio telescope at MIT Haystack Observatory in Westford, Massachusetts, US
The Millstone Hill Antenna features a fully steerable dish spanning 46 meters in diameter, operating as an incoherent scatter radar for upper atmospheric research.
The antenna was constructed in 1963 at Sagamore Hill Radio Observatory in Hamilton, Massachusetts, before its relocation to Millstone Hill in 1978.
The facility connects with other incoherent scatter radar stations from Greenland to Peru, forming a chain for comprehensive atmospheric research programs.
Scientists access the antenna's extensive data records through the Madrigal Geospace system, which contains measurements dating back to the late 1960s.
The structure represents one of two remaining dish antennas of its type worldwide, with its counterpart located at Stanford University in California.
