Mount Carroll Seminary was an educational institution in Illinois that grew from modest beginnings to occupy four main buildings housing over one hundred students by the mid-1800s. The campus expanded steadily throughout the 19th century to accommodate its growing enrollment.
Frances Wood Shimer founded the seminary in 1853, starting with eleven students in a Presbyterian church classroom. The school continued under female leadership until 1896, when control transferred to a board of trustees.
