Mount Major

Mount Major is a mountain summit in Alton, New Hampshire, rising to 1,786 feet above sea level. Multiple hiking paths wind through the landscape and connect to the main parking area on Route 11.

A hiker constructed a stone shelter on the summit during the 1920s to provide refuge for early visitors to the peak. This structure still stands and reflects the long tradition of exploration in the Belknap Range.

This summit serves as a gathering place where hikers of all abilities come to explore the natural landscape together. The mountain holds significance for the local community as a space where people connect with the outdoors.

The main parking lot on Route 11 serves as the starting point for three different hiking trails suited to various experience levels. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially when planning to explore the full summit area.

The landscape features large boulders scattered throughout, left behind by ancient glaciers that shaped the region thousands of years ago. These stone formations serve as natural landmarks along the hiking trails.
