Belknap Mountain, Mountain summit in Belknap County, United States.

Belknap Mountain is a summit in Belknap County, New Hampshire, rising to about 2,380 feet (725 m) above sea level. A fire tower and a communications tower stand at the top, making the peak easy to recognize from the surrounding area.

The mountain takes its name from Jeremy Belknap, an 18th-century preacher and historian who wrote one of the first detailed accounts of New Hampshire's early history. His multi-volume work helped shape how later generations understood the region.

The fire tower at the top of Belknap Mountain is staffed by the New Hampshire Division of Forest and Lands from spring through late autumn to watch for forest fires. From up there, visitors can take in a wide view over the surrounding forests and Lake Winnipesaukee below.

Several trails lead to the top, ranging from gentle paths to steeper routes, so hikers of different experience levels can find something that works for them. The warmer months are the best time to go, as snow and ice can make the upper sections harder to manage in winter.

The rock that makes up Belknap Mountain formed from volcanic activity during the Jurassic period, as part of what geologists call the White Mountain Magma Series. This makes it one of the few places in New England where visitors can walk directly on rocks shaped by that ancient volcanic episode.
