Belknap County is a county in central New Hampshire encompassing approximately 469 square miles (1,215 square kilometers) of land and water. The region surrounds the southwestern portion of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Belknap Mountains near Laconia.
The county was established in 1840 from portions of Merrimack and Strafford Counties. It was named after Dr. Jeremy Belknap, an 18th-century historian and religious figure who documented early New England life.
