Gilford was settled in the late 1770s as part of Gilmanton parish and became an independent town in 1812, named after a Revolutionary War battle by Captain Samuel B. Mason. A recording error in official documents changed the spelling from Guilford to Gilford, making it the only place in New Hampshire named after a war battle.

The town's seal depicts a sailboat with mountains in the background, reflecting the deep ties between the community and its water and mountain environment.
Gilford is about two hours from Boston and less than an hour from Concord, making it accessible for day trips or weekend stays. The town offers nearby services including shops, restaurants, and accommodations close to the lake and mountains, allowing visitors to base themselves easily for exploring outdoor activities.
Gilford was the destination for Boston's first snow train in the 1930s bringing skiers to the mountains, and it hosted New Hampshire's first motorized ski lift in 1934. This early embrace of winter sports shaped the town's identity and made it a pioneer in ski infrastructure for the region.
