Murray D. Lincoln Campus Center, High-rise building at University of Massachusetts Amherst, United States
The Murray D. Lincoln Campus Center is a 14-story reinforced concrete building standing 204 feet (62 meters) tall with prominent support columns visible on every side. The structure houses Hotel UMass, event spaces, and various student facilities across its floors.
Renowned architect Marcel Breuer designed this building in 1970 as part of the University of Massachusetts Amherst's expansion program. It represents an important example of modern concrete architecture from that era.
The center serves as a gathering place where students meet for classes, events, and informal hangouts throughout the day. It functions as the social heart of campus life.
The building is easily accessible from the main campus areas and welcomes both visitors and students. Lower floors contain public facilities while upper levels house hotel rooms for overnight guests.
The building's design features 16 main structural columns that manage weight distribution while creating space for interior circulation and stairwells throughout the floors. This approach allowed for flexible open floor plans without additional walls.
