Old Chapel, Historic chapel at University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA.
The Old Chapel in Amherst is a granite structure with a distinctive tower featuring rounded arches, a clock face, and 44 carillon bells above. Inside, the renovated building now contains a Great Hall, multipurpose rooms, and a catering kitchen, all accessible through a modern glass pavilion entrance.
Architect Stephen C. Earle designed this structure in 1884, with construction completed in 1887 using the Richardson Romanesque style. The building was created as a major facility for the growing university campus.
The chapel serves as a gathering place where students and the university community come together for lectures, performances, and ceremonies. It remains an active hub for academic and social events throughout the year.
The building is fully accessible through multiple entrances and accommodates visitors with varying mobility needs. Plan your visit during academic events to experience the interior spaces and see the building in use.
The building features 44 individual carillon bells housed in the tower, creating a distinctive musical and visual element rarely seen in university buildings. These bells continue to be part of the campus soundscape and add a historical dimension to the structure.
