The Newburyport Public Library occupies a renovated 18th-century Federalist mansion with an additional modern wing at 94 State Street, offering 102,000 volumes to visitors.
Founded in 1854 by Josiah Little, the library first opened in 1855 at City Hall with 5,750 books before moving to its current location in the Tracy Mansion.
The library organizes regular art history discussions, children's storytimes, and technology assistance sessions while maintaining extensive local history manuscript collections.
The facility operates Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Friday and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with printing services at 20 cents per black page.
The building previously belonged to Nathaniel Tracy, who constructed the first Yankee privateer during the Revolutionary War before facing bankruptcy in 1786.
