Pleasant Valley Wine Company
Pleasant Valley Wine Company, Historical winery in Hammondsport, United States
Pleasant Valley Wine Company occupies nine stone buildings built in Italianate style, arranged across the estate to handle different stages of winemaking. The structures contain vintage equipment, fermentation tanks, and storage cellars that visitors can observe throughout their tour.
Founded in 1860 by Charles Champlin and a group of investors, this winery became the first federally bonded facility of its kind in the nation. The designation established it as a model for commercial winemaking in the United States.
The winery reflects the heritage of finger Lakes wine country and represents how European techniques took root in New York soil. Local communities came to view this place as a symbol of the region's identity and agricultural pride.
The estate sits just outside Hammondsport village and is easily accessed by car with ample parking on the grounds. Plan to spend time walking between buildings and through cellars, so comfortable shoes are recommended for exploring the full scope of the property.
During Prohibition, this winery continued production by legally making wines for religious ceremonies and medicinal purposes at a time when most competitors closed. Few American wineries survived this era by finding such practical loopholes.
