The island appeared on the first detailed map of Virginia and Maryland created by Joshua Fry and Peter Jefferson in 1751. Its documented presence on this early map shows it has been a recognized geographic feature for centuries.
The Williams family, residing at the nearby Sycamore Dale plantation house, maintains ownership of this natural formation in the Potomac River.
The island can be viewed from the Romney Bridge or the Northwestern Turnpike. Local fishermen access it directly through the river.
