Pontiac Township, Michigan, Former civil township in Oakland County, Michigan.
Pontiac Township was a civil township in Oakland County, Michigan, bounded by Brown Road, South Adams Road, South Boulevard, and Telegraph Road. The territory served as a foundation for multiple municipalities that eventually incorporated as separate cities.
Established in 1827, the territory grew as an administrative division and served as the original jurisdiction for what would become the city of Pontiac and other surrounding communities. Over time, different areas broke away to form their own independent cities.
The region developed from Native American territory into an industrial center, particularly notable for automotive manufacturing and transportation infrastructure.
The township no longer exists as a governing entity, having dissolved as separate cities incorporated from its boundaries. Visitors interested in the area's past can explore the neighboring communities of Auburn Hills and Pontiac, which developed from this original territory.
The area pursued incorporation as Pontiac Heights in 1971 but ultimately became Auburn Hills in 1983 after receiving city charter status. This transformation reflected a shift in how the community chose to govern itself.
