Princeton Battlefield, Revolutionary War battlefield in Princeton, United States
Princeton Battlefield is a 681-acre state park featuring rolling meadows, wooded areas, and several historic structures including the Thomas Clarke House. The grounds include walking trails and monuments distributed throughout the landscape.
The grounds witnessed combat on January 3, 1777, when Washington's forces defeated regular British troops in what marked a significant military success. This victory came early in the war and provided crucial confidence to the American cause at a critical moment.
The battlefield served as a turning point in the nation's fight for independence and remains a place where Americans reflect on the shared sacrifice of soldiers from both sides. Visitors can see how this ground shaped the emerging nation's character and sense of purpose.
The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset with an entrance located about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Princeton University. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since the trails traverse open meadows and wooded sections.
A columned monument on the grounds marks the burial site of 36 fallen soldiers from both sides of the conflict. This memorial reflects how the site honors the shared sacrifice of those who died in the fighting.
