Federal protection came to this land in 1987 as part of a conservation effort involving national forests in the region. This designation marked an important step in preserving the forested landscape for the long term.

One marked hiking trail runs through the area on an out-and-back route. Plan to bring water from outside the protected zone, as reliable water sources within the wilderness are limited.
