Rough Mountain Wilderness

Rough Mountain Wilderness is a protected landscape spanning forested slopes that rise toward a mountain ridgeline with varying elevations throughout. The terrain features steep grades and rocky outcrops characteristic of this Appalachian region.

Federal protection came to this land in 1987 as part of a conservation effort involving national forests in the region. This designation marked an important step in preserving the forested landscape for the long term.

The area maintains natural habitats for black bears, deer populations, and numerous bird species, supporting environmental research and wildlife observation activities.

One marked hiking trail runs through the area on an out-and-back route. Plan to bring water from outside the protected zone, as reliable water sources within the wilderness are limited.

Water sources within the wilderness boundaries are limited, with most reliable water points located outside the protected area perimeter.
