Homestead Dairy Barns, Historic dairy complex in Bath County, Virginia.
Homestead Dairy Barns is a complex of seven stucco-faced buildings with dark green trim, centered on a main barn with double silos and support structures. The facility included specialized buildings for different dairy operations such as milking, calf care, and ham processing.
The Virginia Hot Springs Company built the complex in 1928 to supply dairy products for the nearby Homestead resort operations. Production ceased in the 1970s due to rising operational costs and government regulations affecting the dairy industry.
The complex displays Colonial Revival and Craftsman design elements that were typical for agricultural buildings of the early 20th century in Virginia. These architectural choices reflected common design preferences of the era for farm structures.
The buildings have been inactive since the 1970s and can be viewed from the exterior. Visiting the site in person allows you to appreciate the architectural details and layout of the different structures on the grounds.
The main barn features two distinctive tiled silos, representing a carefully crafted detail of the facility's construction. These specialized silos were functionally important for storage and reflected the operators' investment in quality infrastructure.
