SEFOR, Nuclear research facility in Washington County, Arkansas
SEFOR was a nuclear research facility in Arkansas that housed a sodium-cooled test reactor and various support buildings for operations. The entire site underwent systematic decontamination and complete dismantling after its closure in 2019.
Operating from 1969 to 1972, the facility gathered essential data for designing large commercial sodium-cooled reactors under the US Atomic Energy Commission. The University of Arkansas later took control of the site for graduate education and equipment testing purposes.
The University of Arkansas acquired the facility in 1975, transforming it into a research center for graduate students and equipment calibration purposes.
The site no longer exists as decontamination and dismantling work concluded in 2019. Visitors interested in the location can explore its history as part of the region's industrial and scientific heritage.
The reactor system used mixed oxide fuel and liquid sodium as coolant to generate heat without producing electricity. This experimental approach was designed to evaluate the safety features of this technology under normal operating conditions.
