Staple Bend Tunnel, Railroad tunnel in Mineral Point, Pennsylvania.

The Staple Bend Tunnel extends 901 feet through solid rock, featuring a stone-lined interior and a Roman Revival entrance with Doric pilasters.

Construction workers in 1831 earned 13 dollars monthly while working twelve-hour shifts to create the first railroad tunnel in the United States.

The tunnel displays the determination of early American engineering through its stone craftsmanship and architectural elements that combine function with classical design.

Visitors reach the tunnel through a four-mile round trip trail starting from the parking lot on Beech Hill Road near Mineral Point.

Natural light penetrates through both portals of the tunnel, eliminating the need for artificial illumination during daytime visits.
