Sharon Johnston Park, Protected area in New Market, Alabama, US
Sharon Johnston Park is a protected area in New Market covering 250 acres with a 12-acre fishing lake, swimming pool, outdoor track, and soccer fields. The facilities are spread throughout the grounds to serve different recreational interests.
The park was established in 1979 after the Johnston family donated the land following Sharon Johnston's death in a flying accident in 1974. This collaboration between the family and Madison County Commission created the memorial space.
The park serves as a memorial to Sharon Johnston, a 31-year-old pilot who died in an aerobatic flying accident in 1974.
The swimming pool operates from Memorial Day through early August with swim lessons and a full-service concession stand. The track and soccer fields are available year-round, and fishing in the lake is possible during park hours.
The grounds include an outdoor shooting range with dedicated areas for skeet shooting, pistol practice, and rifle training. This specialized facility sets it apart from typical recreational offerings at other parks in the region.
