Smoot Theatre, Historic theatre in downtown Parkersburg, United States.
The Smoot Theatre is a theater in downtown Parkersburg featuring Neoclassical design with four fluted Ionic columns and brick construction accented with terra cotta details. The facade displays a Greek key cornice pattern at the roofline, creating a distinct classical appearance that defines the building's character.
The building was constructed in 1926 by the Smoot Amusement Company and operated initially as a vaudeville venue hosting live performances. In 1930, Warner Brothers acquired the property and transformed it into a movie theater.
The venue displays original Art Deco interior details with burgundy and cream decoration, gilded trim, and working stage trap doors that remain functional during performances. These decorative elements and mechanical features create an experience that reflects the entertainment tastes of the 1920s.
The venue is located in downtown Parkersburg and hosts theatrical productions, concerts, and community events throughout the year.Visitors should check ahead for upcoming performances to plan their visit accordingly.
The building faced demolition in 1989 but was saved by local volunteers who organized a restoration effort that brought it back to life. The renovated venue is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a cultural anchor for the community.
