South Britain Historic District

The South Britain Historic District spans 135 acres along Route 172, containing 61 buildings that represent various architectural styles from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The district developed around water-powered industries in the 1700s, with mills utilizing the Pomperaug River for activities such as textile manufacturing and lumber processing.

Greek Revival, Federal, and Georgian architectural elements define the district's buildings, including two churches, residences, and commercial structures from different construction periods.

The South Britain Historic District Commission, established in 1991, maintains preservation guidelines and oversees modifications to buildings within the protected area.

A nineteenth-century power canal system remains visible, connecting the Pomperaug River to former mill complexes that drove the local economy.
