South Britain Historic District

South Britain Historic District is a historic district in Connecticut containing around 61 buildings spanning the 18th and 19th centuries with varied architectural styles. The area features churches, homes, and former commercial structures arranged along a scenic route through the region.

The district developed from the 1700s around water-powered mills that used the Pomperaug River for textile and lumber production. These industrial facilities shaped the community's growth and economic foundation for generations.

Greek Revival and Federal styles shape how buildings look across the district, telling the story of different construction periods through their architectural details. Walking through, you notice how these design choices reflect what was popular when each structure was built.
