St. Gabriel's Church, Catholic church building in Murray Hill, Manhattan, US
St. Gabriel's Church was a Catholic church building located at 310 East 37th Street in Murray Hill, featuring marble altars and religious statues throughout its interior. The structure stood adjacent to a school complex that served the local community.
The parish was established in 1859, growing out of the Church of St. John the Evangelist with land donated by Columbia College professor Henry James Anderson. The building was demolished in 1939 to make way for the Queens-Midtown Tunnel construction.
The Sisters of Charity managed the girls' school while the Brothers of the Christian Schools operated the education program for boys.
The building no longer exists today, but its architectural elements were transferred to a new church in Riverdale. A visit to the area now reveals the modern tunnel and the transformed streetscape at this former location.
The church's interior was partially preserved in 1939 by transferring marble elements and statues to the newly built church in Riverdale. This rescue of architectural elements shows efforts to mitigate loss from major construction projects.
