Sniffen Court Historic District

Sniffen Court Historic District comprises ten two-story brick buildings arranged along a narrow alley between East 36th and East 37th Streets in Manhattan. The structures retain original architectural features, including large arched doorways that once provided passage for horse-drawn carriages.

The district was built in 1863 during the Civil War and originally served as stables for the carriages of local families. Through the 20th century, these spaces gradually transformed into residential buildings.

The Amateur Comedy Club has operated since 1884 and established its permanent home in two former stables here in 1918. The space continues to draw performers and audiences who value its secluded courtyard setting.

The courtyard is a quiet, walkable space easily explored between the two streets. Visitors will find minimal traffic and can move through or observe the area at a relaxed pace.

Musicians Cole Porter and Lenny Kravitz, along with author Pearl Buck, chose this hidden courtyard as their Manhattan home. The location attracted creative residents who valued the seclusion and refuge few other Manhattan settings provide.
