St. Mary's Episcopal Church
St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Gothic Revival church in Burlington, New Jersey
St. Mary's Episcopal Church is a Gothic Revival church building featuring a tall stone spire that houses eight bells cast by a foundry in England during 1865. The structure stands in the downtown area and is part of a historic district containing multiple other protected buildings.
Construction took place between 1846 and 1854 following an English architectural model, with the building created using stone rather than more common materials of that era. It was among the earliest Episcopal churches in the region and played a role in the state's religious development.
The burial ground here holds graves of significant American historical figures, including signers of important founding documents and state leaders from the nation's early decades.
The church sits downtown on a main street and is part of a district with other historic buildings within walking distance. The location is easy to reach and allows visitors to explore multiple landmarks during a single visit.
A major fire in 1976 damaged the building during renovation work and drew fire departments from several neighboring areas to fight it. The event shows the significance of the place to the broader community beyond the city.
