Burlington Island

Burlington Island is a river island in the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and New Jersey, featuring a central freshwater lagoon surrounded by wooded areas. The island contains diverse sections including historical sites, open spaces, and natural habitat.

Dutch settlers established Fort Wilhelmus on the island in 1624, representing the first European settlement in what would become New Jersey. This fort served as a key strategic location during the early colonial period in the region.

The Lenape people called this place Matinicunk, meaning Island of Pines, reflecting their deep connection to the natural landscape before European arrival. Today visitors can sense this indigenous heritage through the land itself and the stories embedded in the island's name.
