T. O. Fuller State Park, Tennessee state park in South Memphis, United States
T. O. Fuller State Park is a 1,138-acre state park in South Memphis featuring woodlands, hiking trails, and various sports facilities. The landscape shifts between Mississippi flood plains and elevated ridge areas.
The park began in 1938 under the Civilian Conservation Corps and became the first state park for African Americans east of the Mississippi River. During construction, workers discovered remains of a prehistoric Native American settlement.
The park honors Thomas O. Fuller, an African American educator who dedicated his career to teaching and civil rights advancement. His legacy remains visible today through this green space that serves the local community.
The park has a swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, softball fields, and picnic areas with grills throughout the grounds. Come prepared for multiple activities and wear comfortable shoes if you plan to explore the hiking trails.
The site includes the Chucalissa Indian Village and Museum, built on a prehistoric settlement discovered during park construction in 1940. Visitors can explore the history of this ancient culture at its original location.
