South Main Street Historic District, Historic district in downtown Memphis, United States
South Main Street Historic District is a downtown Memphis area containing over 100 commercial buildings constructed between 1900 and 1930 in Art Deco and other architectural styles. The buildings span about eleven blocks and display a mix of materials, colors, and architectural details from that era.
The completion of Memphis Central Station in 1914 made this area a major transportation hub and triggered a wave of hotel and business development. This growth established the neighborhood as a vital commercial zone for decades.
The district served as a major shopping and entertainment hub where people gathered to shop and visit theaters. Today, the storefronts and theater facades still evoke this social role as you walk through the streets.
The district is easy to explore on foot since the buildings are closely spaced and streets are clearly marked. Visiting during daytime is best for viewing the architectural details of the building facades clearly.
A freight tunnel beneath the streets connects the Railway Express Agency building to the train station, revealing how cargo and packages were moved in the early 1900s. This hidden passage remains closed to visitors but stands as proof of how commerce once flowed underground.
