Shrine Building, Historic commercial building in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Shrine Building at 66 Monroe Avenue is a fourteen-story structure with Early Twentieth Century Modern facade elements and multiple retail spaces on its lower levels. The design incorporates architectural features that blend commercial and fraternal uses throughout its floors.
Architects Hanker and Cairns designed this structure in 1923 as headquarters for the Al Chymia Shriners, a fraternal organization based in Memphis. The lower floors were leased for commercial purposes while upper sections served the organization's needs.
The building served as a gathering place for fraternal organization members who occupied the ninth floor with their dedicated spaces. The two-story meeting hall hosted events and assemblies that shaped the social life of the city.
The building now contains 75 condominium apartments created after a 2005 renovation that converted it into residential housing downtown. Ground-floor retail spaces remain accessible to visitors while upper floors are restricted to residents.
The original design included a rooftop restaurant, a billiard room, and a basement swimming pool that demonstrate how multifunctional early twentieth-century buildings were designed. These amenities made it a complete leisure destination for members and tenants of the time.
