Dermon Building, Historic commercial building in Memphis, Tennessee, US.
The Dermon Building is a ten-story commercial structure in Memphis with dark brown brick walls and ornamental trim in yellow, green, and white terra cotta. The facade spans fifteen bays on both front and rear elevations with decorative rosettes positioned between the second-floor windows.
The building was completed in 1925 and initially served as headquarters for the company and insurance business of its developer. It maintained this purpose until the early 1980s before becoming a listed historic property.
The building reflects the architectural tastes of its era through ornamental details that were typical of successful commercial structures in the 1920s. These decorative choices expressed the confidence and prosperity of Memphis's business community during that period.
The original double-hung windows with terra cotta sills have been preserved across all ten floors and define the building's exterior character. When visiting, the structure is best observed from the street level to appreciate its full facade and architectural details.
The building's developer Dave Dermon arrived in Memphis as a Jewish immigrant from Kiev and transformed himself into a successful businessman and real estate developer. His remarkable rise from working as a tinsmith represents an important personal story in the city's commercial history.
