Morgan Keegan Tower, Postmodern office building in downtown Memphis, United States
The Morgan Keegan Tower is a 21-story postmodern office building in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, clad in reddish granite. The tower houses law firms and professional services across its upper floors, with a lobby that opens to a ground-level atrium.
The tower was built in 1985 by Lowery Companies on the site of the Hotel King Cotton, which had stood there since 1927. The demolition of that hotel was part of a broader wave of urban renewal that reshaped downtown Memphis during that period.
Four stone griffins that once decorated the Hotel King Cotton were saved during demolition and placed in the tower's atrium. Visitors who step inside can see these carved figures standing quietly among the modern finishes of the lobby.
The tower sits in the central business district of Memphis and is easy to reach on foot from other downtown landmarks. Parking is available in the surrounding blocks, and the building is straightforward to find along the main street grid.
The reddish granite used on the exterior was sourced specifically for this project and gives the tower a warm tone that stands apart from the grey or glass surfaces common on nearby buildings. This makes the tower easy to spot from a distance even without knowing its name.
