Thompson Observatory, Astronomical observatory in Beloit, Wisconsin
The Thompson Observatory features a 22-inch reflecting telescope positioned at coordinates 42.505° N and 89.03167° W in the state of Wisconsin.
Constructed in 1968 at Beloit College, Thompson Observatory succeeded the Smith Observatory, which had operated since the 1880s until its replacement.
The facility supported astronomical research while providing educational opportunities for college students and hosting regular stargazing events for local residents.
The observatory remained operational until 2008 when its telescope was removed during the construction of the new Center for Sciences at Beloit College.
Named after Alfred S. Thompson from the class of 1892, this institution represented a technological advancement in telescope capabilities at Beloit College.
