Van Tassell and Kearney Horse Auction Mart
Van Tassell and Kearney Horse Auction Mart, Historic horse auction building in East Village, Manhattan, US
The Beaux-Arts style building at 128 East 13th Street features a restored facade with classical architectural elements and three-story structure design.
The auction mart, constructed in 1903, served as a central marketplace where elite families like the Vanderbilts purchased premium horses every Tuesday and Friday.
From 1978 to 2005, prominent artist Frank Stella maintained the building as his studio space, contributing to the preservation of its original structure.
The building now houses the Peridance Center with multiple dance studios and the KnJ Theater for performances in the East Village district.
During World War II, the structure transformed into an assembly-line training facility where women learned manufacturing skills for the war effort.
