Marquis de Lafayette, Bronze memorial statue in Lafayette Park, Washington DC, US
The bronze statue depicts Lafayette in civilian attire with a sword, standing on a marble pedestal adorned with additional bronze figures at its base.
In 1777, Lafayette traveled from France to America at age nineteen, joining the Continental Army as a major general under George Washington's command.
The monument features symbolic figures including a bronze representation of America extending a sword toward Lafayette on the south face of the pedestal.
The memorial stands at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Madison Place Northwest, managed by the National Park Service since its installation.
Congress allocated 50,000 dollars for this monument through an act approved in March 1885, with construction completing in April 1891.
