The New School University Center

The New School University Center is a 16-story building at Fifth Avenue and 14th Street that combines classrooms, design studios, laboratories, and student housing across approximately 375,000 square feet. Inside, it houses an 800-seat auditorium, a central library, research facilities, and dining areas that together form a vertical campus.

Construction began in August 2010 and completed in January 2014, marking the largest capital project in the New School's history. The design by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill reflects the merging of modern educational requirements with innovative urban building standards.

The building stands as a hub of urban academic culture with its distinctive brass shingles and glass exterior that shape the Fifth Avenue streetscape.

The building sits prominently at Fifth Avenue and 14th Street and offers clearly organized public areas that you can explore and use. Its various spaces are stacked vertically, so it helps to know the entrances and elevator systems before orienting yourself.

The building uses an ice-storage system and cogeneration plant to reduce its energy consumption and achieve LEED Gold certification. This hidden technical system allows it to operate efficiently despite its size and heavy use.
