Gorham Building, Commercial landmark in Flatiron District, Manhattan, US.
The Gorham Building is an eight-story brick structure at 889 Broadway distinguished by terracotta detailing and cast iron ornamentation. The roofline features a distinctive Dutch Mansard design at the top.
The building was constructed between 1883 and 1884 as the headquarters of the Gorham Manufacturing Company, New York City's premier silver maker. The company occupied the structure until 1906.
The building stands within the Ladies' Mile, a historic zone that once defined the city's shopping and commerce. Today, residents and visitors experience it as a marker of when this neighborhood was the heart of wealthy retail trade.
Today the structure functions as residential cooperative apartments with modern amenities including elevators and roof access areas. The exterior can be viewed from the street since it contains private residences.
The building was designed by architect Edward H. Kendall and blends red brick with ornamental details in both terracotta and cast iron. This stylistic combination makes it a rare example of its design approach in the urban landscape.
