935-939 Broadway, Commercial building from 1862 in Flatiron District, Manhattan, United States.
The structure at 935-939 Broadway is a six-story brownstone with Italian design details, built in 1862. The facade features Renaissance elements including pediments over windows and decorated capitals positioned throughout.
Richard Mortimer commissioned architect Griffith Thomas to design this Italian-style building in 1861. A sixth floor was added to the structure in 1919.
The American Institute of Architects chose this location for its offices starting in 1866, making it a gathering place for the architectural community. Important professional meetings took place within its walls.
Ground floor spaces traditionally served retail purposes while upper floors housed offices, a commercial arrangement that has remained largely unchanged since construction. Visitors can observe how the interior layout reflects this division of uses.
A fire at the Pach Brothers studio in 1895 caused significant water damage throughout the building. This incident remains one of the most notable events in the structure's history.
